Truck sales propel Ford's market share

DETROIT, July 6 (UPI) -- Truck sales in the United States are reshaping market shares among automakers and giving Ford Motor Co. a leg up on the competition.

Sales at Ford rose 13.1 percent in the first half of the year compared to the same period of 2012.

That leads all U.S. companies in terms of growth for the year with numbers pushed by the Ford F-Series truck, which held onto its spot as the No. 1 selling vehicle in the country, the Chicago Tribune reported Saturday.

Trucks accounted for the two top-selling vehicles, with the Chevrolet Silverado coming in second. Trucks made up three of the top five best-sellers, with the Dodge Ram coming in at No. 5.

The top five best-sellers January through June include the F-Series with 367,486 sold, the Silverado with 242,586, the Toyota Camry with 207,626, the Honda Accord with 186,860 and the Ram with 170,319 sold.

Nissan's Altima (167,787 sold); Ford Fusion (161,146); Toyota Corolla (158,972), Honda Civic, (158,704) and the Ford Escape (156,626) round out the top 10, the newspaper said.

Autodata Corp. said sales for the year in the United States include 46.1 percent from U.S. companies and 44.7 percent from Asian companies.

For the first six months of the year, 7.8 million vehicles were sold in the United States, a 7.7 percent increase of the same period of 2012, Autodata said.
