? ? In the summer of 2004, I finished my first job contract in Hefei, China. Hefei is the?capital city of Anhui province, home of Yellow Mountain, and a population of three million people. I was to start my new job posting in South China exactly one month later in a city called Dongguan. At the time, I had no idea that the business of relocation existed. So, like many people who do not know about this service, I moved from Central China to South China on my own. In total, I had eleven suitcases. Looking back on it now, I can laugh, but at the time it was a stressful situation. To make a long story short, I paid?a large sum of money for overweight luggage and three men to help me carry all my bags from the taxi to the check-in counter at the airport in Hefei.

? ? Now, after spending 3 years in the moving and relocation business I know better....let me share some more information with you regarding International, Domestic, Local, Pet Relocations and Storage in Transit to help you better plan your next move. Rest assured you don?t have to move by yourself; UniGroup Worldwide UTS is there to help you with a professional team of office and support staff to make your next China relocation stress free!

I. International shipments can be sent via sea or air. Below you will find a chart showing the differences of sending shipments by air vs. sea:

Sea Air

- charged by volume in cubic meters
- more cost effective
- longer transit time

- charged by volumetric weight - more expensive
- less transit time

? ? If all documents for origin and destination custom clearance are in order, the below table is an approximate guideline showing door to door service transit time including custom clearance:

Destination Transit time by Sea Transit time by air

China within Asia 3-5 weeks 10 working days
China to Oceania 3-5 weeks 10 working days
China to Europe 6-8 weeks 10 working days
China to North America 6-8 weeks 10 working days China to South America 8-10 weeks 10-15 working days China to Africa 10-12 weeks 10-15 working days

? ? In order to clear customs and apply for an export permit for a sea shipment leaving China, the following documents are needed for 2 working days after the packing of your home. Therefore you will want to leave at least a 2 day gap between your packing date and final departure date from China.

You will need:

1. Original passport with minimum 1 year residence permit attached
2. Original work permit valid for at least one year (this is a separate book then your passport)
3. Company letter (stamped by company)
4. Packing list

Your destination country may have certain requirements for importing household good shipments. You may be required to:
- be present in the country when your shipment arrives
- have your work permit and resident permit ready before your shipment

arrives

Your moving coordinator at origin should explain all of this to you during your home visit. Packing time depends on the size of your shipment. A 20 foot container can hold 28 CBM and a 40 foot container can hold 56 CBM.

Size of shipment Packing time

0-5 CBM 1- 3 hours
5-10 CBM 3-5 hours
10-15 CBM 5-6 hours

40-56 CBM 2 full days (9:30 am to 5:30pm)

Once packing is finished, UniGroup operations staff will need to leave the premises with your belongings. You must obtain a release slip from your landlord or your management office in advance to avoid any delays.

II. Domestic China shipments are sent via truck, sea or air depending on the final destination city. Your moving coordinator should recommend which option is best for you. Below you will find a chart showing the differences of sending shipments by air, sea or truck.

Air Sea Truck

- shorter transit time
- more expensive

In order to avoid any delays, be sure to obtain a release slip from your landlord or management office so UniGroup operations staff can leave the premises with your belongings. You should also inform your new landlord and management building of your moving in date so you can access to an elevator and underground parking.

IV. Pet Relocations can be sent via air as cargo or accompanied baggage. You will need to provide the following information for a pet shipment.

Name
Sex
Breed
Color
Vaccinations (we can help with this) Microchip (we can help with this)
Health Certificate (we can help with this) Weight

Size Photo

Depending on the destination, quarantine of your pet may be required. Please see below a chart of quarantine requirements for different destinations.

Destination Quarantine

China to Australia Via Hong Kong or Malaysia 6 months China to Canada No need
China to America No need
China within Asia No need

V. Storage in Transit is calculated by volume in cubic meters per month. While your shipment is in storage you will be able to access it, but there will be a storage handling fee charge. Storage is sometimes needed due to work and
residence permits at you destination not being ready or you just not needing your items due to you going on vacation or another posting for a short period of time.

Regardless storage is something to consider as it can be costly if over a long period of time. UniGroup Worldwide UTS has our our storage facilities in South China with over 700 m2 of space available.

The key to a successful move is good planning and communication between you and your moving coordinator. All dates should be discussed, recorded, and confirmed with your moving coordinator at the pre-move survey to eliminate or minimize any delays or extra cost. It is important that your moving coordinator not just understand the moving procedures but also understands you and is sensitive to your needs and requirements.?
