Syria activists: Rebels advance near major airport

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian rebels captured a strategic neighborhood near Aleppo's international airport on Saturday, putting opposition fighters in control of a key road that the regime has used to ferry supplies and reinforcements to soldiers fighting in the embattled northern city, activists said.

Troops loyal to President Bashar Assad and rebels have been locked in a deadly stalemate in Aleppo, Syria's largest urban center and main commercial hub, since an opposition assault last summer. Seven months later, the rebels hold large parts of the city and its outskirts, including several army bases, but they have been unable to overcome the regime's far superior firepower.

The capturing of the Sheik Said neighborhood, southeast of Aleppo, is a significant blow to regime forces because the area includes a major road, linking the northern city with the airport. The army has used the road to supply troops.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said rebels captured the area Saturday after several days of fierce battles with Assad's troops. Rebels have previously established enclaves outside Syria's major cities to threaten the regime, including near the capital, Damascus, but they were later attacked by Assad's fighter jets and artillery.

The opposition's Western backers, including the United States, have been reluctant to supply rebels with more sophisticated weapons because of the increased influence of an al-Qaida-affiliated group among the anti-Assad fighters on the front lines. The Islamists growing prominence in the Syrian opposition has fueled fears that Muslim radicals might try to hijack the revolt that started as peaceful protests against Assad, whose family has ruled Syria for more than 40 years.

In Germany, Vice President Joe Biden said, "The opposition (to Assad) continues to grow stronger."

Speaking at an annual security conference in Munich, Biden stated the conviction of the U.S. and many others. "President Assad ? a tyrant hell-bent on clinging to power ? is no longer fit to lead the Syrian people and he must go," Biden said.

Assad has repeated brushed aside international calls to step down, characterizing its opponents as Islamic extremists who are out to destroy the country. In a speech last month, Assad outlined a peace initiative that would keep him in power.

The opposition coalition has rejected any talks with Damascus until Assad steps down. However, Moaz al-Khatib, the president of the coalition that is dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood movement, said Wednesday that he is willing to negotiate with members of Assad's regime to bring a peaceful end to the country's civil war.

Later on Saturday, Biden was scheduled to hold a separate meeting in Munich with al-Khatib as well as the international envoy to Syria's conflict, Lakhdar Brahimi, and Russia's foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov.

Russia is Assad's longtime ally, and it has disagreed sharply with Washington and its Western allies on ways to end the bloodshed in Syria. Moscow has maintained that Assad is part of the solution to the crisis, though Russian officials have recently criticized their ally in Damascus and even mentioned the possibility of rebels winning the war.

However, Lavrov told the gathering of top security officials that Biden's statement that Assad must go was counterproductive.

"The persistence of those who say that priority No. 1 is the removal of President Assad ? I think it's the single biggest reason for the continued tragedy in Syria," Lavrov said.

Syria's civil war is estimated to have claimed more than 60,000 lives since the uprising against Assad erupted in March 2011.

Despite disagreements on ways to end the fighting and Assad's role in peace efforts, Lavrov said Russia shared the West's concern over the fate of Syria's arsenal of chemical weapons.

As the regime grows more desperate to retain power, many fear it could use the weapons against its own people ? a claim Damascus has repeatedly denied. There have also been concerns that conventional and unconventional weapons that Syria is said to have could end up in the hands of Islamic radicals.

"The red line is a common line for all of us: We are categorically against any use of weapons of mass destruction, be it chemical, be it biological, be it nuclear," Lavrov said. He added that the Syrian government has repeatedly assured Moscow that it is watching over those weapons and keeping the rebels away from the sensitive sites.

"Our partners agree with us that the biggest threat is the probability or possibility that the rebels get hold of those chemical weapons," Lavrov said.

Authorities: Teen wounded in Ga. school shooting

ATLANTA (AP) ? An Atlanta fire official says a 14-year-old has been shot in the head at a middle school and has been taken to a hospital.

Atlanta Fire Cpt. Marian McDaniel also says a teacher suffered minor cuts and bruises but was treated on the scene at Price Middle School. Earlier, a police spokesman said he was headed to the school about 2 miles south of downtown following reports of a shooting.

TV news helicopters show a swarm of Atlanta police officers at the school.

McDaniel says the shooting victim was taken to Grady Hospital but information on the teen's condition was not immediately available.

For Beckham in Paris, flashbulbs burn differently

PARIS (AP) ? In London, the paparazzi hunt in packs, as David Beckham and other celebrities know well. When Beckham moved to Los Angeles, high-speed road chases by photographers were the norm until a Hollywood star became governor and set a few ground rules. The Parisians ? soon to have the star in their midst, playing for soccer club Paris-Saint Germain ? catch their prey from a distance, equipped with long lenses all the better to see you with.

Three different cities, all feeding a public hungry for celebrities in their own ways.

As the Beckham phenomenon takes on the City of Light, the PSG store was selling jerseys already bearing his name and people were speculating about where he might live.

His wife Victoria, the former Spice Girl turned fashion designer, is staying behind in Britain but expected to pay frequent visits to the world capital for haute couture.

Games that were already sold out to a Parisian audience are likely to get more global recognition.

"Everybody knows David Beckham intimately. ... It's not Beckham, the flesh-and-blood Beckham, it's the Beckham in our own imagination. But then again that's what celebrities are, aren't they? Products of our own imaginations," said Ellis Cashmore, a sociologist at Britain's Staffordshire University who writes about celebrity, sports and media.

Beckham may have to reacquaint himself with the intrusions of European paparazzi, Cashmore said. In 2007, when Beckham joined the Los Angeles Galaxy and moved to California with his family, he said he once counted 47 cameras following him. It got so bad that when he was a guest on Jay Leno's show, Beckham apologized for the craziness in the neighborhood the two men shared.

Leno said he knew something was up when the photographers kept waving him along, hoping instead for a glimpse of Beckham. But the soccer player said Los Angeles wasn't nearly as bad as London.

"So far the paparazzi have actually been really kind to us," he told Leno at the time. "In England we've got a problem at the moment where 15- or 16-year-old children are given cameras and being told to get whatever shot they can."

Two years later under Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who knew about the problem firsthand, California passed a law that targeted celebrity photographers and their reckless driving.

"Beckham has obviously lived in that environment and probably got used to living without paparazzi but he's going to have to get used to them all over again I imagine now because they will be following his every movement in Europe. But I'm guessing he's quite comfortable with that," said Cashmore, who wrote the book "Beckham."

But where British celebrity photographers are known for swarming a star on the street, the French tend to keep their distance and stay undercover.

"We function in a different way," said a French photographer who covered Beckham's arrival in Paris on Thursday and saw the difference firsthand. The photographer refused to be named, saying his job depended upon remaining incognito. "Discretion allows us to get images that are a little more interesting."

The 1997 death of Princess Diana, killed in a Paris car wreck as her driver raced away from pursuing photographers was a major turning point for some in the profession, especially in a shocked France.

And it was long-distance discretion in the south of France that snared the former Kate Middleton, who was snapped sunbathing topless in a villa the royal family had thought to be safely private for the Duchess of Cambridge and her husband Prince William, Diana's son.

The French photographer said the British paparazzi were perfectly able to manage in Paris nonetheless, especially with someone like Beckham who "plays the game."

"If there was a French player who went to London, we'd be a bit lost," he added.

Paris isn't Los Angeles, the mother lode for celebrity photographers. Or even London, which has the royal family and ? of course ? all the Beckhams but one.

Beckham won't be the only Angeleno transplanted to the banks of the Seine. It was announced last week that Natalie Portman and her husband, the French dancer Benjamin Millepied, will move to Paris in 2014 from Los Angeles.
