NJ Gov. Christie blasts fellow Republican Boehner

(AP) ? New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is blasting fellow Republican John Boehner for the House Speaker's decision to delay a vote on Superstorm Sandy relief and says the inaction is "inexcusable."

Christie said Wednesday that the House is playing politics with the $60 billion aid request and it's hurting Northeasterners who are relying on aid to be able to repair their homes, reopen businesses and make decisions about how to rebuild after the October storm.

The governor, who is one of the nation's highest-profile Republicans, hinted that he might campaign against some members of his own party who acted to delay a storm-aid vote.

In the days after the storm, Christie frequently praised Democratic President Barack Obama for his response and attentiveness.

Governor Bryant Requests SBA Assistance for Storm Damaged ...

JACKSON ? Gov. Phil Bryant has requested federal disaster assistance from the U.S. Small Business Administration for Pearl River County as a result of tornadoes and severe storms Christmas Day.

Governor Bryant?s request for SBA assistance is based upon joint damage assessments conducted by local, state and SBA officials. Pearl River County received large amounts of damage including 81 homes and businesses being impacted.

If approved, the SBA would provide low interest loans for homeowners, renters and business owners in Pearl River and counties that border it, to repair or replace disaster damaged personal property such as furniture and clothing or to repair disaster damaged primary residences and businesses.

?While there is not sufficient damage statewide to qualify for federal disaster grants from FEMA, we are committed to doing what we can to help our citizens recover,? said Governor Bryant. ?The SBA disaster loans would provide much needed financial assistance to help people rebuild their homes and businesses at a lower interest rate than is widely available on the open market.?

If SBA assistance is approved, loans to businesses of all sizes and non-profit organizations will also be available to repair damage to real estate, machinery, equipment and inventory.

SBA low interest are generally 4 percent or below for homeowners and renters, businesses and non-profit organizations.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and the Mississippi Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster will work with impacted residents in all the counties affected by the Christmas storms to identify unmet needs and work to get them the assistance they need. Anyone with damages from these storms should contact their local emergency management office or call Mississippi 2-1-1 for additional information.

For more information or questions contact MEMA External Affairs or visit www.msema.org. For details about SBA visit www.sba.gov/disaster.

GigaOM: Intel Media TV service won't launch at CES, but it is coming soon

GigaOM Intel Media TV service won't launch at CES, but it is coming soon

We've seen several reports over the last week about Intel's set-top box efforts, and an impending CES launch. According to GigaOM, some of those rumors simply aren't true. The site has confirmed with several sources at Intel that a set-top box (and a whole lot more) is in the works, but a CES announcement has not been planned. Instead, Media, the mysterious Intel division, which is run like a startup with staffers hired from other Silicon Valley companies rather than shifted from different departments, could be unveiled in March, or perhaps even at the AllThingsD Dive Into Media conference in February.

A detailed GigaOM report outlines the company's plans, which do include a STB manufactured by Intel that would compete with Apple TV, but also solutions for other platforms, including computers, tablets and smartphones. According to GigaOM sources, the company has spent more than $100 million on Intel Media, so it's clearly taking the effort seriously. Still, until Intel Media has been exposed to the market, it's too soon to judge its success. Hit up our source link for the full scoop.

Myanmar fetes 2013 with first public countdown

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? Myanmar rang in 2013 with its first public New Year's Eve countdown and a grand fireworks display, a celebration unprecedented in the former military-ruled country.

The party is the latest, and perhaps most exuberant, example of the country's emergence from decades of isolation.

Organizers announced that about 90,000 people gathered at the countdown venue, a large field in Yangon, for a chance to do what much of the world does every Dec. 31.

Hundreds of people danced and swayed to musical performances on a huge colorfully lit stage, while other revelers ? both young and old ? sat on mats they brought with them or perused food stalls as fireworks burst above.

"This is very exciting and also our first experience in celebrating the New Year at a big countdown gathering. We feel like we are in a different world," said Yu Thawda, a university student who came with three of her friends.

Against a backdrop of the city's famed Shwedagon Pagoda, a large screen showed live New Year's Eve countdowns in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, followed by a 60-second countdown to 2013 in Myanmar.

Singers, celebrities, light shows and other festivities were part of the public party ? something unthinkable under the former military regime, which banned public gatherings, with the recent exception of the traditional Myanmar New Year in April.

Until this year, New Year's Eve was celebrated privately or inside hotels, but there were no open celebrations. Under the military regime the only grand fireworks displays were in honor of Armed Forces Day, an annual celebration of military might.

The reformist government that took office last year urged the public to go out and have fun.

"This event is a very good outlet, particularly for young people," said presidential adviser Ko Ko Hlaing, adding that celebrations like this can "help build mutual understanding between the people and the government."

President Thein Sein has freed hundreds of political prisoners, abolished direct media censorship and allowed public protests as part of a democratic transition that has surprised the outside world.

Many in Myanmar, however, remain skeptical. While people in big cities say they live more freely, they also say the reforms have not improved their livelihoods. People in rural areas of grinding poverty cite continuing human rights issues, abuse of power and abysmal health care.

"People are feeling insecure psychologically, but a public celebration will make people feel light and happy and ease the tension," Ko Ko Hlaing said.

Organizers billed the event as "the first time Myanmar celebrates with the world."

The celebration was arranged by local Forever Media group and Index Creative Village, a Thai event organizer.

"We want residents of Yangon to enjoy the public countdown like in other countries," said Win Thura Hlaing, a spokesman for Forever Media group.

Mountains, Rivers and Temples

6th to 27th November 2012

Day 11 (16.11.12) Mae Sariang - a day trip to Mae Sam Laep (45km)
?

After a good pork and egg porridge breakfast opposite our Mit A Ree Hotel, we walked to the morning market and took the songthaew (B80pp) to Mae Samlaep, a river border village on the Thai side. The road journey took us 1.5 hrs on a dusty winding hilly road. The other side of the river is Myanmar. We then hired a boat to take us upstream on the Salawin River for an hour which cost us B600 and if you wish to visit the village further up would be B1,300. We returned to Mae Sariang on the same songthaew at 12.30 pm and took a rest before walking out at 4.30pm to the Museum and two temples. We were surprised that the beautiful museum building has nothing to display and not in used. We had dinner at Inthira Rastaurant again.

Sleeping: Mit A Ree Hotel at B400 a/c room for 2pax

Day 12 (17.11.12) Mae Sariang ? Mae Sot (232km)

Getting to Mae Sot about 230km from Mae Sariang was actually suffering in happiness ? a 5 and a half hour ride on a songtaew starting at 9.30am and arriving at 3pm. There was no lunch break or wee-wee break except upon request. We had 3 border police check along this mountainous road. We passed by a large Burmese Karen refugee camp along the road. Evening we had KFC for dinner and walked around the town and the Saturday night market beside the Mae Sot Police station.

Sleeping: Baan Tung Guesthouse at B500 a/c room for 2 and B150 for additional bed

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NHL and the union are gearing up for a full day of talks as the deadline nears to reach a deal to save the hockey season.

After the players' association presented a counterproposal Monday, the sides made plans Tuesday for talks that were expected to take up much of the day.

Small groups from each side are to meet or confer by conference call during the afternoon about provisions regarding a potential collective bargaining agreement. A full get-together of negotiating teams wasn't expected at the league office before 5 p.m. EST.

Monday's talks marked the first time the NHL and union met in person since Dec. 13. Commissioner Gary Bettman says a deal must be reached by Jan. 11 so a 48-game season can begin eight days later.
