The Elderly React Slowly Because They Want To Be Right

By Christie Nicholson

Older folks may appear to react or process info slowly. But there may be a method to their meander-ness: they?re making sure they get it right.?

Scientists gave undergrads and adults over 60 visual tests. In one, a computer screen would show an array of asterisks and the subjects had to choose as fast as they could whether there were between 31 and 50 or between 51 and 70. In a second test, the subjects saw a string of letters and quickly decided whether the letters spelled a real English word or not.

The researchers found little difference in accuracy between the younger and older subjects, although undergrads had significantly faster response times. But the older participants? slower response times were not all the result of a decline in skills.?In other tests, the older subjects were encouraged to decide faster, and their response times greatly decreased with hardly any loss of accuracy.

The researchers think it might be a greater desire to avoid mistakes that makes the elderly more deliberate. Because, as the old adage says: if you don?t have time to do something right, how will you find the time to do it again?

Candidates struggle to get names on VA ballot (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Several Republican presidential hopefuls are saying the state of Virginia should put their names on its March 6 ballot for the GOP primary despite their failure to meet state requirements.

Earlier this week, Texas Gov. Rick Perry claimed in a lawsuit that Virginia's requirement of 10,000 signatures by registered voters, with 400 from each of its 11 congressional districts, violates his freedom of speech.

On Saturday, lawyers for Newt Gingrich, Michelle Bachmann, Jon Huntsman and Rick Santorum joined Perry in asking the Virginia State Board of Elections and the Republican Party of Virginia to be added to the ballot. Gingrich told reporters at a campaign stop in Iowa: "This should not be a gauntlet to figure out how you can make it virtually impossible to run for president."

Instantly Turn Video Clips Into Movies With V.I.K.T.O.R (Mashable)

The Spark of Genius Series highlights a unique feature of startups and is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here. Name: V.I.K.T.O.R.

[More from Mashable: Shoutz Connects You to the World, One 15-Second Video at a Time]

Quick Pitch: V.I.K.T.O.R. is an automatic video-editing app.

Genius Idea: The free iPhone app makes movie making and sharing mobile clips quick and easy.

Built-in cameras on smartphone and tablet devices make it easy to record videos of experiences anywhere we go. But how often do we go back to watch these videos or share them?

V.I.K.T.O.R., an automatic video-editing app, provides a simple and convenient way to cut and edit video clips and turn them into short movies. The app allows users to make short movies -- either 20 seconds, one minute or two minutes long -- that actually look professionally edited. For now, it's free to create a movie, but in the future, the company plans to charge $0.99 for 1-minute movies and $1.99 for two-minute movies.

"We all have special moments that we want to remember," Evgenia Bogdanovich, co-founder of V.I.K.T.O.R., told Mashable. "This video editing app offers a way to recollect your memories and turn them into a video presentation that feels emotional and looks professional."

Developed in June, the idea of V.I.K.T.O.R. was inspired while two of the four co-founders of the app were traveling in Hong Kong. Sergey Nurmamed and Alexander Didenko saw tourists taking pictures and recording videos with their phones, and wondered how often people actually go back and look at these memories. When Nurmamed and Didenko returned to Russia, the V.I.K.T.O.R. team decided to create an automatic-editing app to make it easier for people to create movies from their experiences and share them with friends and family.

To start making mini-movies, download the app onto an iPhone and choose one of the following video-editing options:

  • Automatic: The app randomly chooses video footage from your phone.
  • Semiautomatic: Users manually select videos.
  • Controlled: Gives users more control by allowing them to sort their videos by different sections and shots After you select an option, users can also add in their own themes and soundtracks. Browse the list of categories (travels, sports, family, events, lifestyle or moods) and select a theme that suits your movie. Then create a movie title and select the mobile clips that you want to include.
Select an unlimited number of video clips to include in your movie.

Finally, click the "Magic Up!" button to see your own personal edited movie and instantly share it on Facebook, YouTube or via email.

Hit the "Magic Up!" button to see your personal mini movie.

"V.I.K.T.O.R. is a new way of communication because it makes it easier to have a presentation of your experiences to share with your friends and relatives," says Bogdanovich. "Sharing your own movie is much more emotional than sharing a photo."

Unlike video sharing site TwitVid, V.I.K.T.O.R. automatically edits your videos, does not allow you to include your own songs in the soundtrack and does not have an option to directly share your videos to Twitter.

V.I.K.T.O.R. currently has over 400 users and will soon be available for Android devices.

California beats USC 53-49 in Pac-12 opener

    Published: Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011 9:33 p.m. MST

    By Janie Mccauley, Associated Press

BERKELEY, Calif. ? Allen Crabbe converted three free throws with 8.4 seconds left as California earned a hard-fought 53-49 victory over Southern California on Thursday night in the Pac-12 Conference opener for both schools.

Crabbe controlled the ball on the perimeter after USC 7-footer Dewayne Dedmon blocked Jorge Gutierrez's layup attempt. Crabbe was fouled by Eric Strangis on the left side of the 3-point arc as he heaved the ball up with the shot clock expiring.

Gutierrez had 13 points, seven assists, seven rebounds and four steals and Harper Kamp and Crabbe added 12 points apiece for Cal (11-3, 1-0), which remained unbeaten at Haas Pavilion.

Maurice Jones scored 17 points and knocked down three late 3-pointers to keep the Trojans (5-9, 0-1) close in the waning minutes.

Spain revises up deficit and raises taxes (AP)

MADRID ? Spain's new government warned Friday that the country's budget deficit will be much higher than anticipated this year, as it unveiled a first batch of austerity measures that include surprise income and property tax hikes.

Following the new conservative government's second Cabinet meeting, the budget deficit for this year was revised up to 8 percent of national income from the previous government's forecast of 6 percent.

Alongside the upward revision, which comes amid predictions that the Spanish economy will soon be back in recession, the government headed by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced further measures to get a handle on its debts, including euro8.9 billion ($11.5 billion) in spending cuts.

"This is the beginning of the beginning," government spokeswoman Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said.

She said more reforms and austerity will come in 2012.

The conservative Popular Party took power only last week after a landslide election win on Nov. 20 and its main priority is to make sure that Spain doesn't get dragged into the debt crisis mire that has already forced Greece, Ireland and Portugal into seeking financial bailouts and is now threatening much-bigger Italy.

Though Spain's budget deficit is higher than the 3 percent threshold that was supposedly part of the euro's economic framework, it has so far avoided the same sort of bond market pressure that's currently afflicting Italy, partly because its overall central government debt burden is relatively low at around 66 percent ? Italy's is around 120 percent.

The yield on Spain's benchmark ten-year bonds is closing out 2011 at just over 5 percent, lower than Italy's 7 percent, a rate that is widely-considered to be unsustainable in the long-run.

Nevertheless, Spain has to keep a lid on its borrowings especially with unemployment so high and its regions and the private sector is so indebted too following the collapse of a property and construction bubble that had fueled robust growth for nearly a decade. Spain crawled out of nearly two years of recession in 2010, but the economy slowed this summer and growth was outright flat in the third quarter of this year.

An increase in the deficit forecast was not a total surprise, but the scale of the increase was.

Many economists had predicted an increase because the economy stagnated in the third quarter and is now officially forecast to drop back into recession in the first quarter of 2012. Spain's jobless rate is 21.5 percent, the highest in the euro zone.

Alongside the spending cuts, the new government maintained a freeze on civil servants' salaries and on practically all government hiring. Pensions though were increased by 1 percent, the only area of spending to go up ? Rajoy had pledged to increase pensions in a speech to Parliament last week prior to his swearing in.

Taxes on income will also be raised but only for two years.

Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro said the increases will be progressive, with the wealthiest paying more and that the impact on lower-income earners will be minimal. The government is projecting that this will bring in euro6.2 billion.

Taxes will also be raised on homes, but only those less hit by property prices plummeting because of the burst real estate bubble.

Spokeswoman Saenz de Santamaria said the jump in the deficit forecast came as a surprise because the outgoing government was slow in turning over some documents.

"It is going to force us to take extraordinary measures," she said. "We are confronted with an extraordinary and unforeseen situation which is going to force us to adopt extraordinary and unforeseen measures"

Property taxes were also raised, but only through 2013.

The measures will go before Parliament on Jan. 11. Passage is assured because the Popular Party has a comfortable majority.

The measures are part of an extension of the 2011 budget because the last government did not pass one for 2012.

A bigger austerity whack is expected when the new government passes a full blown 2012 budget by the end of March.
