Rep Mack says he's running for Fla US Senate (AP)

SARASOTA, Fla. ? Republican Congressman Connie Mack IV has announced he's entering the U.S. Senate race.

Mack said Monday night that he hopes to challenge Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson.

Mack will first have to win the primary. Buoyed by name recognition, Mack surged to the top of a Quinnipiac University poll even before officially entering the race. His father is former Sen. Connie Mack III and his great-grandfather is Hall of Fame baseball manager Connie Mack.

He will now have to prove he deserves the front-runner status as the other four major candidates attack his record.

Also seeking the nomination are former Sen. George LeMieux, former state Rep. Adam Hasner, retired Army Col. Mike McCalister and former steakhouse chain CEO Craig Miller.

Accused White House shooter faces more mental tests (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? A doctor has determined that a man accused of trying to assassinate President Barack Obama this month is competent to stand trial, but prosecutors on Monday asked for a fuller evaluation.

Prosecutors are seeking a competency hearing and a full psychological screening of Oscar Ortega-Hernandez. He has been charged with trying to kill Obama when he opened fire on the White House with a semi-automatic assault rifle.

Obama and his wife, Michelle, were in California at the time of the gunfire the night of November 11.

An initial screening ordered by a federal magistrate on November 21 concluded that Ortega-Hernandez was competent, according to a court filing.

"The government notes that it was based only on a 50-minute screening and submits a full psychiatric or psychological screening ... is warranted, given the serious nature of the criminal charges pending against the defendant and the likelihood that mental health issues may arise in the course of these proceedings," the prosecutors said in a motion.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Alan Kay agreed to delay a detention hearing until December 12 and asked prosecutors to provide "more substance" to their motion.

Ortega-Hernandez, 21, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, was ordered held pending that hearing.

Witnesses interviewed by authorities said Ortega-Hernandez had called the president the "devil" and "anti-Christ."

His abandoned car was found blocks from the White House after the Friday night shooting. He was arrested at a hotel near Indiana, Pennsylvania, the following Wednesday.

If convicted, Ortega-Hernandez faces up to life in prison.

Utah man pleads not guilty to viewing child porn on flight (Reuters)

BOSTON (Reuters) ? A Utah college professor accused of viewing naked images of children on his laptop while flying first-class to Boston over the weekend pleaded not guilty on Monday to charges of possessing child pornography, authorities said.

Grant Smith, a professor of material science and engineering at the University of Utah, was arrested on Saturday shortly after his Delta Airlines flight from Utah to Boston landed at Logan International Airport, state police said.

Another passenger who saw Smith's computer screen alerted the flight crew about what appeared to be child pornography and also told a family member who contacted authorities, police said.

"These weren't photos of a child in the bath that a parent might keep," Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley said of the images. "These were explicitly sexual and extremely disturbing."

State police interviewed Smith upon arrival and recovered multiple still images from his laptop depicting young girls, some naked and some engaged in explicit sexual activity with adult males, the district attorney's office said.

Police estimate the children in the images were between five and 14 years old, it said.

Smith, 47, was ordered held on $75,000 cash bail, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office said. He was ordered not to have unsupervised contact with any child under 16 as part of the bail conditions, it said.

The University of Utah said it had placed Smith on administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal case.

"Professor Smith deserves a full and fair investigation into this issue," a university statement said. "The University of Utah, however, has no tolerance for the viewing or possessing of child pornography by any of its employees, regardless of where it occurs."

If the allegations were found to be true, the university said it would move to immediately dismiss Smith, who was due back in court in Boston next month.

Islamist party taking most seats in Morocco poll (AP)

RABAT, Morocco ? An Islamist Party is on track to become the largest party in Morocco's new parliament with a dominant showing after two-thirds of the seats were announced by the Interior Ministry on Saturday.

The Justice and Development Party has taken 80 seats, almost twice as many as the next most powerful party, with 282 seats announced out of the 395 up for grabs in the nationwide vote a day earlier.

Barring a massive upset, the PJD ? known by its French initials ? will be the largest party in the new parliament and charged with forming a new government ? making another Islamist victory in an election brought about by the Arab Spring.

Last month, Tunisia's Ennahda Party took 40 percent of the seats in elections in the country that started a wave of pro-democracy uprisings across the Middle East after its people overthrew their long-serving dictator.

Egypt is set to hold elections of its own on Monday that are also expected to be dominated by Islamist parties, lending increasing weight to the view that religious movements have been some of the biggest benefactors of the Arab Spring.

Like the rest of the region, Morocco was swept by pro-democracy protests decrying widespread corruption, which the king attempted to defuse over the summer by ordering the constitution modified to grant more powers to the Parliament and prime minister and then holding elections a year earlier.

Activists, however, have called the moves insincere and clamored for a boycott.

The Islamists' biggest rivals in Morocco's elections is a coalition of eight liberal, pro-government parties led by Finance Minister Salaheddine Mezouar, which has amassed more than 110 seats, but under the new constitution the party with the most seats gets first crack at forming a new government.

The Islamists must now find coalition partners willing to work with them.

In recent years Morocco's Islamists have cultivated an image as honest outsiders battling corruption and seeking to improve services, rather than focusing on moral issues such as whether women wear the Islamic headscarf.

Morocco, a close U.S. ally and popular European tourist destination suffers from high unemployment and widespread poverty.

With dozens of parties running and a complex system of proportional representation, Morocco's parliaments are typically divided up between many parties each with no more than a few dozen seats, requiring complex coalitions that are then dominated by the king.

The government announced a 45-percent turnout in Friday's contest, slightly more than legislative elections in 2007, but still less than local elections in 2009 and the summer's constitutional referendum.

There are almost 13.5 million registered voters in this North African kingdom of 32 million, though it is estimated that there are 22 million people of voting age.
